Southern Mozambique is home to several Bantu languages that are widely spoken alongside Portuguese, the country's official language. The most common languages in the region are Xitsonga (Changana), Ronga, Tswa, and Chope.
Xitsonga is the most widely spoken language in provinces such as Gaza Province and parts of Maputo Province, while Ronga is common around the Maputo area. Tswa is spoken in some communities of Gaza and Inhambane, and Chope is traditionally spoken in parts of Inhambane Province.
These languages play an important role in preserving local traditions, cultural identity, music, storytelling, and community life. Although Portuguese is widely used in schools, government, and business, local languages remain essential in everyday communication throughout Southern Mozambique.
