Languages Spoken in Central Mozambique

Central Mozambique is one of the country's most culturally diverse regions, home to several important local languages. The most widely spoken languages include Sena, Ndau, Shona, Lomwe, and Chuwabo, depending on the province and community.

In provinces such as Sofala and Tete, Sena is one of the dominant languages, while Ndau is widely spoken in parts of Manica and Sofala. In Zambézia, Chuwabo and Lomwe are commonly used alongside Portuguese, the country's official language.

These languages are more than just communication tools—they are an essential part of local identity, traditions, oral history, music, and cultural heritage. Despite the growing use of Portuguese in education and business, local languages continue
to play a vital role in everyday life and community relationships across Central Mozambique.
